Setting Up Your Device

Before You Begin

Already Connected?

This guide picks up after your account is created and your device is connected to the internet. If you haven't done that yet, start with the links below first.

Connectivity

Wi-Fi or Wired — Your Choice

The Nextfriend module supports both Wi-Fi and direct ethernet. If you'd prefer a wired connection, simply plug an ethernet cable directly into the module and it will connect automatically — no additional setup required.

Your Dashboard

Navigating the Dashboard

Once your device is online, log into your account at dashboard.nextfriend.ai. You'll see three tabs across the top.

📱 Devices

Lists all your registered devices. From here you can monitor status, view usage, and configure each device.

💳 Credits

Manage your subscription, purchase credit packs, or cancel your plan. Your device ships with free credits so it works right out of the box.

🕐 Usage History

A full log of every interaction and how many credits each one used. Also accessible by clicking the eye icon next to any device.

Device Configuration

Setting Up Your Character

In the Devices tab, find your device and click the gear icon ⚙️ on the right. A settings panel will slide out — this is your character configuration screen where you control everything about how your AI character thinks, speaks, and behaves.

Step 1

Write Your Character Prompt

The prompt field is the most powerful tool you have. This is where you define your AI character — its name, personality, role, environment, and anything it should know about your attraction. The more detail you provide, the better your character performs.

Example Prompt

Your name is [Name] and you are a 6-foot-tall scarecrow.

You work at [Attraction Name].

Attraction hours are 10am to midnight. Ticket prices are $79.

The bathrooms are down the hall to the left.

You are funny, sarcastic, and always stay in character.

Keep all replies to 2 sentences or less.

Pro tip: Always include "Keep all replies to 2 sentences or less" in your prompt. This keeps interactions snappy, saves credits, and prevents your character from rambling.

Step 2

Choose a Voice

We offer a wide selection of voices to match your character. Browse the options and use the Play button to hear a sample before you decide — no guesswork required.

If you don't find a voice that fits your character, reach out to us at info@nextfriend.ai. We're always adding new voices and can create a custom voice specifically for your character.

Step 3

Base Personalities (Optional)

We include a set of pre-configured base personalities you can apply as a starting point. These are optional but useful if you want a quick foundation to build on.

AI Terminator — Cold, robotic, mission-focused

Funny — Lighthearted, jokes, crowd-pleasing

Scary — Dark, unsettling, atmospheric

Storyteller — Narrative-driven, immersive

Christmas Cheer — Festive, warm, seasonal

Base personalities layer on top of your custom prompt. Your prompt always takes priority.

Step 4

Mic Sensitivity & Volume

Every scene is different — some attractions are loud, some are quiet. We give you full control over microphone sensitivity and volume so you can tune the device to your exact environment.

We recommend starting both settings at a moderate level and adjusting gradually. There are two important things to be aware of:

⚠️ False Wake Word Triggers

If mic sensitivity is set too high, the AI character may activate on its own because it thinks it heard the wake word "Awaken." Background noise, music, or nearby conversations can trigger this. Start at a moderate sensitivity and adjust from there.

⚠️ Audio Feedback Loop

If mic sensitivity is high and volume is at or near 100%, the device may pick up its own speaker output and respond to itself. Keep these two settings balanced to avoid this.

Microphone Options

Using an External Microphone

The device works with its built-in microphone, but you can also connect any standard USB microphone for better pickup range and placement flexibility.

There are also compatible Bluetooth microphone options that allow you to position the mic on a stand away from the speaker — useful for larger scenes or when you need to separate the microphone from the unit.
